This is a full-flavored alternative to mashed potatoes, and it is especially good with pork roast or roast chicken with gravy. Chicken broth boosts the flavor, but you can use water alone, if you wish.

1½ pounds turnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks

1 pound baking potatoes, such as russets, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks

8 garlic cloves, crushed under a knife and peeled

1¾ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth

3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk

2 tablespoons (¼ stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley or dill, for serving
